Leeds United, Aston Villa and Derby County among Championship clubs ready to mount legal challenge to stop EFL’s new TV deal
A number of Championship clubs are ready to mount legal action to stop the EFL’s new TV rights deal with Sky Sports.Leeds, Aston Villa and Derby are the most outspoken against the new deal, which was signed on Monday and is worth 595million over five years. The deal guarantees the EFL 119million per season1

However, a number of their second-tier rivals agree that the new deal is undervalued, especially as Sky can now show Championship matches behind their red button service and can increase their total number of televised games from 138 to 158 in the final two years of the contract. And, according to The Times, a crisis meeting has been called for so Championship clubs can discussing taking legal action against the EFL, who are claimed to have defied the wishes of the majority of clubs by signing the deal. A large number of teams are ready to mount a legal challenge to stop the deal coming into force, while they are also calling for Shaun Harvey, the EFL chief executive, to resign.Upon confirmation of the deal, Harvey said: “The deal we have entered into with Sky, after fully testing the current market through our external advisors, allows our clubs the benefit of financial security which was an absolute priority for us throughout this process.

Sky's new TV deal explained

  • The EFL and Sky agreed a five-year deal worth 119million per season, up 31m per season on the exisiting deal.
  • Sky are able to broadcast 138 EFL games a season, with a minimum 20 of those being League One and League Two matches.
  • In the final two years of the deal, this total rises by 20 to 158 games broadcast every season.
  • 16 of those games will be Championship matches on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and Sky will also get eight additional midweek games as co-exclusives with the clubs streaming services.
  • They will also be available to Skys residential customers via its red button service.
“It is a partnership that, as well as having the necessary financial benefits, provides the EFL with the platform to maximise reach and exposure for its competitions, alongside providing further opportunities for clubs to monetise some of those games not broadcast on television through a (direct to consumer) offering.”Earlier this month it was reported that Leeds, Villa and Derby were among 15 Championship clubs threatening to form a breakaway ‘Premier League 2’ should the unfavourable deal be signed off, though League One and League Two teams are believed to largely accept the terms of the new agreement.

So much did the decision affect my support of the club that I never once felt as if I was missing out, or that I should go back and watch a game. Amazing when you consider that in those two years since the re-brand the football club won the Championship and played in top flight for the first time since the early 1960s.
