Maja reportedly had until Friday to tell the club if he was going to accept their contract offer, which offered him seven times his current wage.In a meeting at lunchtime on Friday, the striker told officials at the club he would not be signing the deal despite telling boss Jack Ross he wanted to stay the day before.The decision came as a surprise to Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald who revealed on Twitter he only found out about Maja’s change of heart following a phone call from a Sky Sports News reporter.He tweeted: “Josh Maja update. Yesterday Josh asked to see Jack to say he will sign. Today I got a call from Sky TV saying he won’t sign.“Josh advised his agent has said don’t sign but no courtesy to tell the club – Also we offered what the agent indicated!!! Busy January ahead.”Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie broke the news that Maja had been offered seven times his current salary on Twitter.He said: BREAKING: Sunderland striker Josh Maja has told Sunderland this lunchtime he will NOT be signing their contract offer. 15-goal Maja had until today to give his final answer to the club. Sunderland offered him seven times his current wage to stay.A number of Premier League clubs are reportedly monitoring his situation closely with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Southampton all interested.
